I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve written my first Christmas book. Set in Amsterdam, it’s the story of a clumsy younger man who has a crush on his older brother’s best friend. The two men grow close while on holiday when they’re forced to share a hotel room. Merry Measure is a low angst romantic comedy – just what I like to read during the holidays.
I’ve always wanted to write a Christmas book, but the time was never quite right. I was always either in the middle of writing a series or on the brink of finishing one. However, last year my husband took me to Amsterdam for my birthday, and I fell in love with the beautiful city. I knew immediately that I wanted to set a book there, and Merry Measure is as much a love story to Amsterdam, as it is to Arlo and Jack. Most of the descriptions were tapped out on my phone while I was sitting in various cafes around the city, and I have so many happy memories of that time.
Writing the book was certainly a new experience for me as an author because logistics meant that I had to write it during the summer. England was under lockdown, and I holed up in my study trying to conjure up a wintry Amsterdam. To my family and our neighbour’s bemusement, that meant playing Christmas songs very loudly. It was slightly odd to hear Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ playing while the sun shone and my husband cooked on the barbecue.
